Dumbass Pays $14 Million for a License Plate- Yesterday in Abu Dhabi, a real estate magnate paid $14 million for a vanity license plate at a state funded charity auction (News: Arab Pays).  Saeed Khouri wouldn’t tell the media how many cars he has or which one it would be going on, but he did tell the world he has deep pockets.  “I bought it because it’s the best number.  I bought it because I want to be the best in the world.”  The oil rich nation began auctioning off these plates last year in order to provide funding for victims of traffic accidents.  The plate itself is very plain and does not contain any western numbers or symbols, only the Roman numeral number 1.  And, even more ridiculous, 90 more plates were sold at the same auction for just over $90 million total.  WTF?  $90 million at a license plate auction?  $14  million for one crummy license plate?  Proceeds to go to a rehabilitation center for victims of traffice accidents?  What the hell is this madness?  How many people is your tiny country rehabilitating for car accidents?  Is this why gas is $3.50 a gallon, so some Arab can buy a $3 license plate with the number 1 on it?  Hey Saeed.  I know where is a really nice PA license plate I could let you have for only $1 million plus tax and shipping.  I know of a worthy charity here in the real world too.  How about donating $70k to pay off my student loan comrad?  Have $2 million for my retirement fund?  I sure could use a new jet to fly to my teaching job an hour away.  Have one?  Well folks, this is exactly why we are paying a hefty figure for gasoline and other petroleum based products.  So some pimple-faced, rich Arab kid can buy a shitty $3 license plate for $14 million, then put in one of the the Mercedes in his fleet of high-priced cars.
